What to expect from counseling, therapy, psychotherapy, and coaching in Asheville

Asheville is a period of rapid growth with hotels cropping up everywhere, tourists flocking to the breweries, and rents skyrocketing. For those of you that have been here for a long time, these changes can be hard to stomach.  While Asheville keeps making lists for the best places to visit in the United States, the truth is, this place is rad. However, just because Asheville is fantastic, doesn’t mean life doesn’t come up and you don’t sometimes need some support. You think that you may want a counselor, therapist, or psychologist-but you don't really know what to expect. I’d like to help you find someone who can help.

So, you found a few therapists in Asheville that seemed fine. You probably have a ton of questions, and that is entirely normal. In my opinion, it is a great idea to ask your questions ahead of time to make sure that the therapist or counselor can fit your needs.

Here are a few frequently asked questions to talk with a potential therapist about.

FAQ'S to ask a potential therapist:

1- Frequency - How often will therapy sessions occur? You might think that you would like to pop into treatment once a month and the therapist may expect you to come weekly. Have this conversation ahead of time to make sure you are on the same page.
2- Price per Session and On-going Availability – Therapy is an investment of your time and money.  You want to select someone that fits your budget so you can meet consistently so that you can make the most of the therapy experience.
3- How long does therapy take? It is good to have this conversation up front with a potential therapist to understand how the therapist measures progress and how they determine the length of the therapy treatment.
4- Proximity to You – Pick someone that’s located near your home or work so therapy can integrate easily into your routine. It will reduce cancellations and missed appointment fees.
5- Insurance – Decide whether you want to see someone that takes your insurance (i.e., in-network provider) or someone that doesn’t.  If they don’t, find out if your insurance company will reimburse you for sessions after the fact.
