About Radically Inclusive Therapy

Hello! I’m Toryn Davis Black, pronouns she/ her, I am a Trauma Specialist, Certified Therapist in EMDR, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina and California. I offer racially inclusive therapy, counseling services, and clinical supervision and consultation in person in my Asheville office and online for North Carolina and California folks.

I help people who’ve been hurt and othered by the world transform negative beliefs about themselves into fierce self-love so that they can live authentic, empowered, and connected lives.

I have twenty years of experience working in the mental health field. I worked as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in the San Francisco Bay Area in private practice and community-based non-profit mental health settings for a decade before moving to Asheville in 2018.  I have extensive experience working with survivors of complex trauma, the LGBTQIA+ community, systems-impacted families (foster care & legal system), and communities of color. The people, who I have had the honor to serve, have been my best teachers.

My Approach To Therapy and Counseling in Asheville

I firmly believe that you are the expert on your own life. I believe that inside each one of us is an innate capacity to heal ourselves and that therapy creates the conditions for this to come forward. My role is to help you discover your internal wisdom and repurpose the skills that were the key to your survival but are now holding you back.

In my clinical work, I lead with my heart and believe relationships are crucial to healing. I bring my humanness and authenticity to each interaction in therapy. I am humble, I apologize, and I take responsibility for the impact of my actions. I acknowledge what I don’t know and make it my responsibility to learn on my own time, and I will return with changed behavior. I know that tending to relationships by addressing ruptures and making repairs are key to therapeutic work and healthy relationships.

I have a strong sense of ethics, boundaries, and justice. I know boundaries are essential to establishing trust and being in right relationship with one another. I guide folks to listen to and honor their boundaries. I name, own, and tend to unearned power and privilege and how it shows up in the therapy room. I explore and can hold the nuance of intersectionality. I am passionate about deconstructing and unlearning the oppressive conditioning that gets inside our heads and messes with our sense of ourselves. I know this is essential to collective liberation and true self-love.

I empower people by teaching them about how trauma symptoms show up in their minds, emotions, and body. I help folks to develop personalized, effective strategies to manage when difficult experiences come up outside of therapy sessions. I am well-trained, have extensive experience, and use powerful and transformative trauma interventions.

I value healing and justice - particularly where the two meet, whether that means healing the injustices that have happened in your life or liberating yourself from oppressive messages you have internalized from living in a white supremacist, patriarchal, homophobic, transphobic, fatphobic, and able-ist society. Or understanding what you have emotionally inherited from past generations. Increasing our consciousness and curiosity and developing fierce compassion towards ourselves not only heals us as individuals but also our communities and future generations.
