Couples Therapy & Relationship Counseling in Asheville

You really love your partner. That is not the problem. But you're having some awful interactions that seem to happen out of nowhere and escalate pretty quickly between the two of you. It can feel really bad. There seems to be a pattern forming and each time it happens, it feels the same way - like something deep and old is being unearthed. It is so confusing and uncomfortable that once it blows over you both avoid ever talking about it again because you just want things to get back to normal. But the next time it happens, the resentment and hurt from the previous interaction come bubbling back up again.

You worry that not being able to work through these times means that you are not compatible or that the relationship is not working. It may feel like a contradiction but the closer you get to someone then the harder it can be to speak up and share your thoughts and feelings. There is more at stake - more to lose. At the end of the day, you just need to know that your person is going to be there for you. This is where Relationship Counseling, Couples Therapy, and Marriage Counseling comes into play.

I can help you and your partner to:

  • Learn how to REALLY listen to one another

  • Untangle the difficult and confusing interactions that keep happening

  • Talk about the hard stuff like gender, race, culture, money issues, and class differences

  • Navigate life transitions (including gender transition) and make major life decisions together including discussing ethical non-monogamy and poly relationships, etc

How I work in Couples Therapy in Asheville

I help couples understand what happens between them during heated and difficult moments. I help each person understand what's going on inside of themselves and track where their reactions are coming from. I help couples decrease the negative reactions that they have to one another. I am trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and incorporate this into my work in Asheville with couples in relationship counseling. I work with couples that are in traditional and non-traditional relationships. I welcome couples of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures.

I believe in the compelling power of love. I do not understand it. I believe it to be the most fragrant blossom of all this thorny existence.
